The Australian Pavilion for EXPO 2022 in Dubai was a project conceptualized and completed by our team at Politecnico di Milano. The idea was to create a structure of the pavilion by using prefabricated, tripod shaped concrete components. The process of creating such elements was casting a concrete mixture with steel fiber into lycra sleeves, stretched by parametrically controlled, robotic arms. Once poured, the liquid is stretched into the desired shape, resembling typical Australian polyps coral reef. The main advantage of this technique is that unique forms can be achieved by digitally altering a set of variables at the first concept stage of design, with the goal of having these be ready for assembly at the job site.
